National Education Policy 2020: A Long-Awaited Change

After 34 years, India has got a new National Education Policy (NEP). It aims to focus on core capacities and vocational skills, instead of rote learning. For years, the hype created around Board Exams has troubled students and their parents. But NEP 2020 is set to make the Boards easier and reduce their importance.

Some other remarkable changes include: learning coding from class 6, regional language/mother-tongue/local language as the mode of instruction till age 5, vocational education from class 6 and a 10 day internship at school level.

The progress card or the ‘report card’ will become more holistic and multidimensional to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each student. NEP 2020 will also reduce the stark differentiation between Arts and Science streams and allow students to pick a variety of subjects.
