The BMC currently runs over 4,000 schools in the city teaching the state board syllabus. In a radical move, it decided to offer non-state board curricula from the next academic year 2020-2021.
The corporation received 332 applications for ICSE and 1,510 applications for CBSE. Admissions were done from Jr KG to class 6th for both schools. Though BMC decided to admit 38 students per class, it could fill the seats only for Jr KG, Sr KG and class 1. Whereas it received less than 30 applications for the remaining classes 2 to 6. The popularity of CBSE over ICSE was evident and all 304 seats(38 per class) were filled.
BMC’s plan to offer education on non-state board is aimed at reforming its flagging school system and arresting student attrition.
