In 2020 Class X Mathematics Board Examination, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to conduct two separate examinations for Mathematics. While the first examination will be basic the second one will be standard mathematics test.

The students will get to opt for either the basic mathematics or standard mathematics examination during the registration process. However, the board has also specified that those students who wish to take up basic mathematics in class 11 board examinations will compulsorily have to take it up in class 10. These students will have to take up the compartmental examinations of class 10 to study mathematics in class 11. However, this option is applicable only if the candidate has passed the basic mathematics exam in the class 10 examination.

Candidates will only be allowed to appear for the paper they have marked in their registration form. The controller of Board examination, Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj said that the students opting for basic mathematics will not be able to take mathematics for their class 12 subjects. And if at all these students score good marks in the basic mathematics examination and wish to pursue mathematics for class 12 examination they will have to appear for the class 10 compartmental exam which will be conducted in July next year. Only after passing the compartmental examination will the candidates be able to take up mathematics in class 11. For the first time the board has offered a chance for the students to give the compartmental exam in the subject.

Despite new norms, the board has not changed the syllabus for basic and standard mathematics papers. However, there will be a change in the difficulty level of both the papers. While the basic mathematics question paper will be easier, the standard mathematics paper will be tough and based on concepts.
