The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently made some important decisions for board exams as well as for the exams of other classes. Due to the Coronavirus crisis and rising cases in the country, 10th Boards have been cancelled and 12th Boards have been postponed to an indefinite date. Initially these exams were planned for March, but now the new date sheet for 12th Boards, both theory and practical, will be released only after June 1. Moreover, the focus in classes 9 to 12 exams will shift to ‘competency-based questions’. These will test a student’s practical knowledge and emphasise the application of concepts in real-life or unfamiliar situations. This is one of the steps taken to implement the new National Education Policy (NEP) which aims to replace ‘rote learning’ with a competency based framework that helps develop necessary skills in students; skills with which they can stand confidently on a global stage.
